ADHD & Executive Functioning Therapy

ADHD can affect much more than attention. For children, teens, young adults, and adults, it can show up in organization, time management, impulse control, emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, relationships, school or work performance, and the ability to follow through on things they genuinely want to accomplish.

At Endeavor Psychotherapy Associates, we understand that ADHD looks different from one person to another. Some clients struggle with distractibility or organization. Others may become overwhelmed quickly, react impulsively, have difficulty shifting gears, or repeatedly find themselves in conflict with parents, teachers, friends, coworkers, or partners. Someone can be bright, motivated, and successful in some areas while still struggling significantly in others.

ADHD and executive functioning challenges may include:

  • Difficulty starting or completing tasks
  • Problems with organization, planning, or time management
  • Forgetfulness and difficulty keeping track of responsibilities
  • Impulsivity or acting before thinking
  • Difficulty managing frustration and strong emotions
  • Trouble transitioning, shifting expectations, or being flexible
  • Social difficulties or repeated misunderstandings with others
  • School, college, or work stress despite strong abilities
  • Conflict at home around homework, routines, responsibilities, or independence
  • Low confidence after repeated experiences of feeling unsuccessful

How We Help

Therapy is individualized to the needs of each client and family. Our clinicians help clients better understand how ADHD and executive functioning difficulties affect them, identify what is getting in the way, and develop practical strategies they can use in everyday life.

Depending on the client, treatment may focus on executive functioning skills, emotional regulation, anxiety, problem-solving, social relationships, communication, self-esteem, or increasing independence. When working with children and adolescents, we may also collaborate with parents to better understand challenging patterns, reduce conflict, and develop more effective ways of responding when a child is struggling.

For teens and young adults, therapy may also focus on managing increasing independence and the executive functioning demands that come with high school, college, work, and other major life transitions.

Our goal is not simply to tell someone with ADHD to “try harder” or become more organized. We work to understand why something is difficult and help clients and families develop strategies that are realistic, useful, and sustainable.
