Depression can affect people in different ways. For some, it feels like persistent sadness or hopelessness. For others, it may show up as irritability, withdrawal, low motivation, exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, or simply not feeling like yourself.
In children and teens, depression does not always look like sadness. Parents may notice changes in mood or behavior, increased isolation, declining school performance, loss of interest in friends or activities, changes in sleep, or greater irritability and conflict at home.
Signs that someone may benefit from support include:
• Persistent sadness, emptiness, or irritability
• Loss of interest in activities or relationships
• Withdrawal from friends or family
• Low motivation or difficulty getting things done
• Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
• Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
• Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness
• Declining school or work performance
• Feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities
How Therapy Can Help
At Endeavor Psychotherapy Associates, therapy for depression is individualized to the person rather than based on a single approach. Our clinicians work to understand what may be contributing to the difficulties a client is experiencing and help identify patterns that may be keeping them stuck.
Depending on the client’s age and needs, therapy may focus on developing healthier coping strategies, changing unhelpful patterns of thinking, improving emotional regulation, rebuilding routines and relationships, increasing meaningful activity, and addressing stressors at home, school, work, or in relationships.
For children and adolescents, working with parents may also be an important part of treatment. When appropriate, our clinicians can collaborate with other providers involved in a client’s care.
Depression can make change feel difficult, but people do not have to figure it out alone. If you or your child has been struggling with changes in mood, motivation, relationships, or everyday functioning, contact Endeavor Psychotherapy Associates to discuss what is happening and determine the right next step.
