School and college can create stress for many reasons. Sometimes the problem is academic pressure. Other times, a student may be struggling with organization, motivation, friendships, anxiety, expectations, or simply feeling overwhelmed by everything they are trying to manage.
At Endeavor Psychotherapy Associates, we work with children, adolescents, and young adults who are having difficulty navigating school, college, and the transitions that come with them. The goal is not simply to improve grades. We want to understand what is getting in the way and help students develop the skills and confidence they need to function more successfully.
Students may benefit from support with:
- Academic stress and pressure
- Anxiety about grades, tests, or performance
- ADHD and executive functioning difficulties
- Organization, time management, and procrastination
- Difficulty starting or completing assignments
- School avoidance or reluctance to attend
- Perfectionism and fear of failure
- Low motivation or feeling overwhelmed
- Peer relationships and social stress
- Adjusting to middle school or high school
- Transitioning from high school to college
- Adjusting to college life and increased independence
- Balancing academics, relationships, activities, and other responsibilities
When It Looks Like a Motivation Problem
Parents often come to us frustrated because a capable child or teenager isn’t doing what they know they can do. Assignments may be missing, mornings become arguments, deadlines are repeatedly missed, or a student seems to shut down whenever school is discussed.
What looks like laziness or a lack of motivation can sometimes reflect anxiety, ADHD, difficulty with executive functioning, perfectionism, low confidence, feeling overwhelmed, or not yet having the skills needed to manage increasing expectations.
Understanding why a student is struggling is important. Strategies that work for a student who needs better organizational skills may not work for someone who is avoiding assignments because they are anxious about failing.
Helping Students Build Skills That Work in Everyday Life
Therapy is individualized to the student. Depending on what is happening, sessions may focus on managing anxiety, improving emotional regulation, strengthening executive functioning skills, developing realistic routines, addressing negative thinking, navigating friendships, or learning how to recover from mistakes and setbacks.
With younger clients and adolescents, parent involvement may also be an important part of treatment. We can help parents better understand what is contributing to the difficulty, reduce unproductive conflict around school, and develop expectations and supports that encourage greater independence over time.
For college students and young adults, therapy may focus more heavily on managing increased independence, balancing competing responsibilities, developing routines without as much external structure, navigating relationships, and adjusting to the academic and social demands of college.
Finding the Right Support
A student does not have to be failing academically to be struggling. Some students maintain good grades while experiencing significant anxiety, exhaustion, perfectionism, or stress behind the scenes.
