Parenting can become exhausting when the same problems happen over and over again. Homework turns into a battle. Getting out the door becomes a daily struggle. A child melts down when plans change. A teenager shuts down or becomes argumentative whenever a difficult topic comes up. Parents try consequences, rewards, reminders, reasoning, and sometimes simply giving more space, but nothing seems to change for very long.
At Endeavor Psychotherapy Associates, parent work begins with understanding what is getting in the way. Challenging behavior is often a sign that a child is having difficulty meeting an expectation, managing frustration, adapting to change, communicating what they need, or using skills consistently when situations become difficult.
Parent coaching may be helpful when families are struggling with:
• Frequent arguments, power struggles, or emotional outbursts
• ADHD and executive functioning challenges
• Homework, routines, organization, or responsibilities
• Difficulty with transitions, flexibility, or changes in plans
• School refusal or other school-related struggles
• Anxiety, avoidance, or repeated reassurance-seeking
• Sibling or family conflict• Increasing independence during adolescence
• Parents feeling unsure whether to push, step back, set a limit, or offer support
• Different parenting approaches creating additional tension at home
Understanding What’s Behind the Behavior
It is easy for difficult behavior to become the focus when everyone is frustrated. But repeatedly responding only to the behavior can leave families having the same argument again and again.
We help parents slow the situation down and identify what may be contributing to the problem. What expectation is the child having difficulty meeting? What skills might they need in that moment? What patterns have developed between parent and child? And what can be done differently before everyone reaches the point of frustration?
Understanding the problem does not mean eliminating expectations or boundaries. It helps parents respond more thoughtfully and effectively.
Practical Strategies for Real Life
Parent work is meant to be useful outside of the therapy room. Depending on the family’s needs, sessions may focus on communication, problem-solving, setting realistic expectations, responding to emotional escalation, supporting executive functioning, reducing unproductive power struggles, or helping parents and children work together more effectively.
Sometimes parent coaching occurs alongside a child’s individual therapy. In other situations, parents may meet with a clinician without the child present. We determine the approach based on the needs of the child and family.
Helping Families Get Unstuck
Parenting does not come with one strategy that works for every child. What works well with one child may be ineffective with another, particularly when ADHD, anxiety, executive functioning, emotional regulation, or developmental differences are part of the picture.
Our goal is to help parents better understand their child, feel more confident in how they respond to difficult situations, and develop practical ways to reduce conflict while helping their child build the skills they need.
If your family keeps getting stuck in the same patterns, contact Endeavor Psychotherapy Associates. We’ll talk with you about what has been happening and help determine what kind of support may be most useful.
